Nine Mine Workers Found Dead After Explosion in China

A Jan. 10 gold mine explosion killed 10 workers, while one is still missing.

The bodies of nine workers were recovered in a Chinese gold mine on January 25 after explosions occurred at the mine earlier this month, according to The Star Tribune.

There were two explosions at the Yantai city mine an hour and a half apart on Jan. 10. The cause of the explosions is unknown, but is currently being investigated. The nine deceased workers were found 1,320 feet underground.

“Until this worker is found, we will not give up,” said Yentai city Mayor, Chen Fei.

On Jan. 24, 11 surviving workers were rescued from 70 tons of debris. One worker is still missing and unaccounted for. Local authorities have detained managers of the mine for not immediately reporting the accident.
