FAA Tests Drone Detection System at JFK

The FAA is partnering with the FBI to detect “rogue” drones around airports

The FAA and FBI are partnering to identify “rogue” drones around airports. According to a news release, the FAA is evaluating drone detection technology at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York.

The FAA has received numerous reports over the last couple of from pilots of drones around busy airports.

“We face many difficult challenges as we integrate rapidly evolving UAS technology into our complex and highly regulated airspace,” said Marke “Hoot” Gibson, FAA Senior Advisor on UAS Integration. “This effort at JFK reflects everyone’s commitment to safety.”

To conduct the evaluation, five different rotorcraft and fixed wing UAS participated, and 40 separate tests took place, according to the release.
