NSC's Journey to Safety Excellence Off and Running

Three sponsors and a renewed alliance with OSHA are supporting the new initiative.

SAN DIEGO -- The National Safety Council launched its new Journey to Safety Excellence program in style on Sept. 15 at the 2014 NSC Congress & Expo here, with three sponsors and a renewed OSHA alliance in which the two organizations agreed to support and promote it.

The Journey is a program to help companies -- especially small and medium-sized ones -- measure their safety performance, set realistic goals, and monitor progress; benchmark their performance against industry leaders'; and identify areas for improvement. Companies can share data anonymously, said Lyn Corbett Fitzgerald, NSC's senior director of corporate marketing communications. Free resources available to any company that joins are an employee perception survey, a safety systems assessment, and an incident rate calculator. Fitzgerald said the journey has been under discussion internally for about a year and a half.

Grainger is the program's founding sponsor. "Grainger is dedicated to offering the solutions, services, and products that help create safer, more productive workplaces," said Nino Granatiero, Vice President, Safety Business Line with Grainger. "It was a natural fit for us to team up with the leader in the industry, the National Safety Council, to spread important safety messages and share resources that can help save lives."

The other sponsors so far are BROWZ and Chubb.

The NSC alliance with OSHA will be in effect for the next five years.
