Safety advocates want OSHA to take several steps, including establishing a National Emphasis Program, to strengthen safety and health protections for temporary workers.

NACOSH Temporary Workers Workgroup Meeting Again July 28

The workgroup has met twice this year, on May 9 and Feb. 11, as it works to develop recommendations for NACOSH to consider.

OSHA announced it has scheduled a meeting of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health's Temporary Workers Workgroup on July 28 in Washington, D.C. The meeting will allow the group members to continue discussing several issues about protecting temporary workers as they develop recommendations for NACOSH to consider. According to the announcement, those issues include gaps in workplace protection for temporary workers, differences between temp workers and contract workers, and joint responsibility of host employers and staffing agencies. This has been a priority issue in 2014 for OSHA's assistant secretary, Dr. David Michaels, and OSHA enforcement cases involving temps and staffing agencies are on the rise.

The meeting will take place from 2-4 p.m. EDT at U.S. Department of Labor headquarters. It is open to the public.

OSHA has posted summary accounts of the workgroup's previous 2014 meetings. On May 9, the discussion by workgroup members in attendance included potentially adding more data fields to the OSHA 301 log to capture information on temporary workers' injuries and illnesses; coordinating more closely with ACCSH's temporary worker workgroup; and getting poicy statements from the NSC to inform the workgroup's deliberations.
