EU Unions Start Campaign Against MSDs
The European Trade Union Confederation will kick off an EU-wide campaign against musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) today at a conference in Brussels, Belgium. ETUC, an umbrella organization for trade unions in the expanded European Union, has members representing a total of 60 million workers.
MSDs are the biggest workplace health problem in the EU today, with more than one-third of all European workers suffering a work-related musculoskeletal disorder and surveys indicating the problem is growing, ETUC says.
Speakers at the two-day "Offensive Against Musculoskeletal Disorders" conference include Professor Jorgen Winkel of the National Research Centre for the Working Environment in Copenhagen, postal and textile workers from Malta and Belgium, an office worker from Sweden, and representatives of a building and woodworking trades union and a services union in the EU.
