The National Safety Council and the NCCCO Foundation have launched a free tool designed to help employers identify safety system weaknesses before serious incidents and fatalities occur.
The resource, known as the Organizational Safety Gap Analysis Tool, is designed to assist organizations in assessing their readiness to prevent serious incidents and fatalities, commonly referred to as SIFs. The tool is aimed at owners, executive leaders, and safety professionals and does not require specialized training.
Developed through the National Safety Council’s Work to Zero initiative, the tool is based on the council’s SIF Prevention Model and assesses seven areas tied to organizational safety performance. These include operating environment, leadership, worker engagement, hazard identification and prioritization, hazard abatement and control, implementation and operation, and continuous improvement.
Users receive a personalized report outlining strengths, identifying gaps, and suggesting next steps. According to the organizations, the tool is designed to be accessible to employers of all sizes and across industries.
The launch comes as workplace fatality rates in the United States have remained elevated in recent years, underscoring the need for more effective prevention strategies that address organizational systems as well as frontline hazards.
The Work to Zero initiative focuses on eliminating workplace fatalities by promoting safety practices, leadership engagement, and the adoption of evidence-based approaches to serious injury and fatality prevention.
