OSHA Updates Its Injury and Illness Inspection Program

Establishments that have more than 20 employees and high injury and illness rates are the targets for this program.

OSHA announced the launch of a new inspection program that will provide resources to businesses with high injury and illness rates on Jan. 13, according to the Connecticut Business and Industry Association.

The new program will be the primary targeting program for OSHA and will apply to non-construction companies that have at least 20 employees. Companies will be selected for the program based on the injury and illness data employers submit on form 300A for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The program is intended to help OSHA ensure that workplaces are safe through the direction of enforcement resources. It includes the addition of a new category that uses a three-year data range to target sites reflecting an injury-rate increase. Under the new directive, it is now acceptable to change the scope of an inspection from comprehensive to records-only in certain situations.

OSHA’s new directive will replace 2016’s site-specific directive.
