New Partnership Encourages Safety Within the Elevator Industry

OSHA recently fostered an alliance to promote workplace safety within the elevator industry.

The OSHA Alliance Program has been fostering collaborative relationships between groups committed to the safety of workers for many years now. Recently, OSHA and key elevator industry stakeholders signed an alliance to protect industry employees and promote nationwide safety and health.

The alliance is a two-year partnership between OSHA’s 10 regions and elevator industry stakeholders. Partners in the alliance will provide workers with the means to stay safe and healthy through information, guidance, and training resources. Particularly the alliance has the goal to prevent employee exposure to the “Focus Four” hazards—falls, caught-in or between, struck-by and electrocution—and other noted safety and health hazards during construction, modernization, maintenance and repair of conveyances within the elevator industry.

The stakeholders of the elevator industry consist of representatives of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, National Elevator Industry Inc., National Association of Elevator Contractors, Elevator Contractors of America, Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund and the National Elevator Industry Educational Program.

The partnership will focus on promoting safety and health, particularly emphasizing an understanding of employees’ rights and employers’ responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act). The OSH Act of 1970 is in place to employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for employees. OSHA’s role is to ensure these conditions by setting and enforcing standards.
