Indiana OSHA to Investigate Incident at DeKalb County Factory

Indiana OSHA will investigate an incident that occurred last week in which a worker was injured while working on a piece of machinery. As of Friday, he was in critical condition.

The Indiana Occupation Safety and Health Administration will look into a severe incident that occurred at a DeKalb County factory last week.

An employee suffered an electrically shock while working on a piece of machinery at DeKalb Molded Plastics. He was subsequently hospitalized, and as of mid-day Friday, was in critical condition.

Police responded to a call that a man was down, and when they arrived, the worker was unconscious. Emergency responders picked him up and moved him away from the area where he was found on the floor.

“I believe he was responding to a maintenance issue on the piece of equipment that he was working on, and it’s possible he may have been working on an electrical issue with the machine, said Butler Police Chief James Nichols.

DeKalb Molded Plastics creates custom molded medical devices and other products, including ones to help ensure roadway safety. They released a statement saying that they currently did not know the cause of the incident.

“The incident has been reported to Indiana OSHA as is required,” the statement reads. “At this point, no determination has been made as to the cause of this injury. Worker safety is our number one priority at DeKalb Molded Plastics. We take worker safety very seriously. Efforts are being made to support our injured team member and his family. We appreciate the efforts of the medics and others who provided emergency medical assistance.”

It is unknown if IOSHA has sent out an inspector to interview possible witnesses and do a thorough review of the area.
