NIOSH Taking Applications for 2020 Safe-in-Sound Awards

The agency seeks companies that have adopted a "no tolerance" attitude toward occupational hearing loss and have both employees and management involved in preventing it, as well as organizations that have developed evidence-based, innovative approaches to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

NIOSH is accepting nominations until midnight on July 15 for the 2020 Safe-in-Sound Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention Award™, which is given by NIOSH in partnership with the National Hearing Conservation Association and the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation. The award recognizes those who demonstrate, by example, the benefits of developing or following good hearing loss prevention practices, and Safe-in-Sound Award™ winning stories are shared at special award ceremonies and in press releases disseminated to the occupational health and hearing research communities.

The agency seeks companies that have adopted a "no tolerance" attitude toward occupational hearing loss and have both employees and management involved in preventing it, as well as organizations that have developed evidence-based, innovative approaches to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

Self-nominations are encouraged.

The first step in submitting a nomination is to send a letter directed to Scott Schneider, the Safe-in-Sound Review Committee coordinator, at [email protected]. The letter should identify the nominee and contain their contact information, provide a brief description of the noise control or other hearing loss prevention interventions that suggest excellence or innovation, and provide a brief description of any evidence of its effectiveness.

Once the letter has been received and reviewed, NIOSH will contact the nominees. Those who are considered eligible will be informed about how to complete the nomination. The agency's information for preparing a strong nomination describes the minimum documentation to be provided and gives examples of questions to be addressed when completing a nomination.

The Safe-in-Sound expert review committee will evaluate all applications. All applicants will receive notification regarding the outcome of the committee evaluations.
