National Flood Safety Awareness Week Under Way
NOAA and the National Weather Service want the public to know that flooding is a coast to coast threat across the United States and its territories during all months of the year.
NOAA and the National Weather Service are marking National Flood Safety Awareness Week 2019 during March 11-15, joined by agencies such as the New York City Office of Emergency Management.
Each year, more deaths occur from flooding than from any other hazard related to severe weather, the agencies report, explaining that the main reason is people underestimate the force and power of water. More than half of all flood-related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream, and many of those deaths are preventable.
NOAA and NWS want the public to know that flooding is a coast to coast threat across the United States and its territories during all months of the year. Flood Safety Awareness Week is intended to highlight some of the many ways floods can occur, the hazards associated with floods, and what Americans can do to save lives and property.
