SPE Gulf Coast Section Hosting Oil & Gas Safety Workshop Feb. 14

The Houston workshop includes lunch, and participants will receive a certificate of participation. Proceeds will benefit the SPE Gulf Coast scholarship fund.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers' Gulf Coast Section will present an Oil & Gas Safety Leadership/Culture Workshop on Feb. 14, 2019, in Houston. The site is the Marathon Conference Center, Room P1021, at 5555 San Felipe.

The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It features three speakers:

  • Eddie Hill, CSP, CHMM, Safety and Sustainability Leader for Equinor, speaking on "How to Motivate and Lead for Operational Excellence."
  • Michael L. Beaton, MBA, North America Crude HSSE Advisor for Shell Trading US. His topic is the company's "Journey to Goal Zero." Beaton will share Shell Trading's experience in guiding and influencing third-party HSSE programs to drive improvements in operational excellence, as well as what it takes to develop a proper safety culture and embed the goal zero mind-set within third-party organizations.
  • Jeffrey Burro, GSP, Project HES Manager for Marathon Oil, speaking on the topic "Communicating the Safety Message with Impact at Marathon Oil." During 2018, Marathon Oil has facilitated Safety Leadership courses for more than 1,200 employee and contract personnel, which culminates with each participant crafting and delivering his or her own personal "Safety Stump Speech." Burro will cover the Safety Leadership course curriculum Marathon Oil is using to maximize discretionary effort of personnel on the job site and introduce a practical tool for using personal stories to positively influence an organization's safety culture.

The event includes lunch, and participants will receive a certificate of participation. Registration costs $100 for SPE members, $125 for non-members and walk-ins, $50 for students, members in transition, and retired SPE. Proceeds will benefit the SPE Gulf Coast scholarship fund.
