NRC Approves Revised Emergency Preparedness Plan for Oyster Creek Plant

The changes in the plan include exemptions from some requirements that may not be applicable to a plant that has permanently ceased operations.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently approved changes in the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station's emergency preparedness plan. The changes in the plan include exemptions from some requirements that may not be applicable to a plant that has permanently ceased operations, as Oyster Creek, in Lacey Township, N.J., has.

One the licensee implements the exemptions, state and local governments may rely on comprehensive emergency management ("all hazard") planning for off-site emergency response at the facility, rather than a dedicated off-site radiological emergency response plan, according to NRC's announcement.

The plant will maintain an on-site emergency plan and response capabilities, including continuing to notify state officials of an emergency declaration.

Based on the NRC staff's recommendations, the commission approved the exemptions on July 17. The exemptions were granted Oct. 16 and a safety evaluation was issued that day; license amendments reflecting the exemptions were issued Oct. 17.
