President Approves Disaster Aid for Kilauea Volcano Victims

The president also approved relief from other FEMA programs, including legal aid, crisis counseling, and unemployment benefits.

President Donald J. Trump has approved federal emergency housing aid and other relief for victims of the Kilauea Volcano eruption on Hawaii's big island. The approval came a day after Hawaii Gov. David Ige formally requested aid for an estimated 2,800 residents who have lost their homes or were forced to evacuated since the volcano began erupting May 3. An estimated 455 residences have been destroyed, according to Ige's office.

No specific figure was attacked to the disaster aid package approved by President Trump under the FEMA-administered Individuals and Households Program, but the Honolulu Star-Advertiser has reported that eligible homeowners and renters could receive up to $34,000 each.

The Individuals and Households Program provides grants for displaced residents to secure temporary housing while they wait for their homes to be rebuilt or repaired. Grants also can be obtained for costs of repair and replacement.
