The National Safety Council issued a statement supporting the publication of an updated ASTM International standard aimed at preventing serious incidents and fatalities in the workplace.
The revised ASTM E2920-26 standard provides clearer guidance for organizations to identify, record, and reduce serious injury and fatality risks, the council said. NSC and its members played a role in expanding and strengthening the international standard.
“The National Safety Council and our members were proud to provide the expertise and leadership that made this improved standard possible,” said NSC President and CEO Lorraine Martin. “Every single workplace death is preventable, yet for over a decade, workplace fatality rates in the United States have remained stagnant. This new guideline offers a comprehensive framework to help organizations move the needle.”
NSC encouraged businesses across industries to adopt the practices outlined in the updated standard to better protect workers. The organization also highlighted its Serious Incident and Fatality Prevention Model, which is designed to help employers plan, implement, and evaluate prevention strategies.
The ASTM E2920-26 standard is intended to improve consistency in how organizations record serious workplace incidents and assess safety program effectiveness.
