FDNY Honors Fire Inspectors

They inspect buildings and ensure compliance with New York City regulations. The city's fire commissioner, Daniel A. Nigro, congratulated them for contributing to a record low of 48 fire deaths in New York City last year.

The New York City Fire Department hosted a Bureau of Fire Prevention Recognition Ceremony at its headquarters on Oct. 12, honoring 29 fire protection inspectors for their work on behalf of the department and city residents. They inspect buildings and ensure compliance with New York City regulations, and the city's fire commissioner, Daniel A. Nigro, congratulated them for contributing to a record low of 48 fire deaths in the city last year.

"Today, thanks to the extensive efforts by our Bureau of Fire Prevention and all of our inspectors in every unit, from the high-rise unit to the our fuel safety unit, to our construction, demolition and abatement unit - and every unit in between, we continue to make a very dangerous job that much safer," Nigro said.

"We're the largest fire department in the country, and we function as a team, but so much of what we do comes down to each individual accomplishing their goals every day," added Chief of Department James E. Leonard. "Our team is only as strong as the people to comprise it, and you all make our team that much stronger."

"I'm very honored and blessed to work with such a great team with mentors that guided me throughout the year," said FDNY Fire Protection Inspector Emanuela Chihaia. "This job is so important because what we do in the field is mitigate any potential risks – we take preventative measures to ensure the protection of life and property for all citizens in New York, and I'm very excited to continue on with such a rewarding career."

Cirissa Spencer, Community Coordinator in the Bureau of Fire Prevention, was one of the peoples recognized. "In the Bureau of Fire Prevention's Shelter Task Force, my job is to coordinate inspections to ensure families staying in shelters during their transition are living in buildings that are up to code and safe," Spencer said. "It feels great to be recognized by your colleagues for your hard work. We work together as a team to accomplish whatever is necessary to keep the people of New York City safe."
