DOL Awards $7 Million for Recovery Efforts in California

The funding has been awarded to the California Employment Development Department as part of a National Dislocated Worker Grant.

The U.S. Department of Labor has approved a National Dislocated Worker Grant award for $7 million to the California Employment Development Department in order to create jobs in cleanup and recovery efforts after a bout of severe storms in January 2017.

Recovery efforts will target the following counties: Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, San Mateo and Santa Barbara. The funds will assist with cleanup, demolition, repair, renovation, and more.

One of the consequences of the storm activity was significant erosion damage to the spillway of the Oroville Dam. Reoperation of the Oroville flood control spillway began April 14 and is planned to continue for approximately 14 days, the California Department of Water Resources reported.

On April 17, the department awarded a contract to Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. for repair work on the dam's spillways. Repairs are scheduled to begin immediately so the system will be operational by Nov. 1, which is the traditional start of the state's winter rainy season. Kiewit's bid of $275,443,850 was the lowest responsive bid, according to the DWR announcement.
