FAA to Release Maps to Speed Up Drone Applications

The maps will depict areas and altitudes near airports where they may operate safely.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced it will release unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) facility maps on April 27. According to agency, the maps will depict areas and altitudes near airports where drones may operate safely. The motivation is to help the agency process requests more quickly.

Users can access the maps at www.faa.gov/uas once they become available. By referring to these maps, users will be able to tailor their requests based on the map, which should make applications more likely to be approved.

The maps do not automatically authorize flights. Pilots still must submit online airspace authorization applications at the same website.
