L&I Announces Maritime Safety Day Event

The day will help stakeholders reduce injuries among maritime workers and will feature workshops presented by industry experts on topics including fall protection and rescue, commercial diving hazards, toxic preservative coatings, and more.

The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries and the Governor's Industrial Safety & Health Conference Advisory Board are co-sponsoring Maritime Safety Day on Oct. 25 at a facility in Des Moines, Wash., to cover some of the chief hazards found at busy waterfront facilities, including crane, trucks, and forklifts.

The event will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Beach Park Event Center. L&I announced it, saying the day will help stakeholders reduce injuries among maritime workers and will feature workshops presented by industry experts on topics including fall protection and rescue, commercial diving hazards, toxic preservative coatings, and more.

"The Northwest is known for its maritime industry," said L&I's conference organizer Rebecca Llewellyn. "This meeting is an opportunity for employees, industry leaders, and government safety experts to come together and share information to promote safety and protect workers." The event is geared toward workers, managers, employers, and safety and health professionals, with Dr. Jennifer Lincoln, director of the NIOSH Center for Maritime Safety and Health Studies, serving as keynote speaker.

Registration costs $60 per person by Oct. 21 or $70 at the door; groups of five or more will pay only $50 per person, and currently enrolled students and apprentices pay $25, and a BBQ lunch is included with the registration fee.
