FAA Improves Runway Conditions Reporting

New Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment standards, matrix will reduce the risk of overrun accidents.

The Federal Aviation Administration has announced it has developed new Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) standards in order to reduce the risk of runway overrun accidents and incidents during bad weather that are due to runway contamination.

The standards are based on the work of the TALPA Aviation Rulemaking Committee. Because of the committee's work, the FAA is now able to communicate actual runway conditions to the pilots in terms that directly relate to the way a specific aircraft is expected to perform.

According to the agency's announcement, airport operators will use a Runway Condition Assessment Matrix (RCAM) to categorize runway conditions and pilots will use it to interpret runway conditions.
