FAA Rules the Republican Convention a No Drone Zone

Flight restrictions have been put in place in Cleveland, Ohio, from July 17 to July 22.

The FAA has announced that Cleveland, Ohio, and its surrounding communities will be a “No Drone Zone” under flight restrictions during the Republican Convention. The restrictions will take effect from 6 p.m. on July 17 through 3 a.m. on July 22. Violating these restrictions could result in criminal or civil charges and are applied to all unmanned aircraft.

There are also airspace restrictions for traditional manned aircraft during the convention.

In addition to these changes, the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2016, which included an amendment to set new guidelines for the operation of drones near chemical plants and oil refineries.

"As the representative of the 36th Congressional District of Texas, which is home to more petrochemical and refining facilities than any other district in the country, I was pleased to have helped secure this much-needed provision and put it on the path to becoming law," said Rep. Brian Babin, R-Texas. "This carefully crafted language will ensure both the protection of our oil and gas facilities and their employees from unauthorized drone activity while also respecting the growing business of public and commercial drone use throughout the United States."
