NHTSA Begins Car Safety Bus Tour

The tour is intended to raise public awareness of the Takata airbag recall, vehicle recalls and how to search for them using NHTSA's Recalls Look-Up Tool, as well as tire maintenance, child safety seats, and heatstroke when children are left in hot cars.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a "Safe Cars Save Lives" bus tour at the Atlanta Farmer's Market on July 9 and will be visiting nine other southern cities during the rest of the tour Aug. 9-13 to spread the word about vehicle safety and the ongoing Takata airbag recall. NHTSA and DOT fined Takata $70 million eight months ago for the way it handled airbag recalls, which was the largest civil penalty ever issued by NHTSA and is the first time the agency had used its authority to accelerate recall repairs to millions of affected vehicles. One of the agency's orders set deadlines for future recalls of other Takata inflators that use a suspect propellant unless they are proved to be safe.

The tour is intended to raise public awareness of:

  • Vehicle recalls and how to search for them using NHTSA's Recalls Look-Up Tool
  • Tire maintenance and safety, including checking for proper tire pressure and wear
  • Child safety seats and their proper installation and use
  • Heatstroke when children are left in hot cars and protecting children from it.

Partners are assisting during the tour, including Safe Kids, the Rubber Manufacturers Association, and AAA.
