NFPA 2016: Big Data and NEC 2017 Changes

The National Fire Protection Association's annual Conference & Expo is taking place June 13-16 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

The National Fire Protection Association's annual Conference & Expo is taking place June 13-16 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, bringing together the industry's leading manufacturers with thousands of fire service and emergency services professionals bent on learning the latest on key codes and standards, fire prevention and suppression technologies, and building and life safety innovations.

NFPA Chair Ernest Grant and President Jim Pauley are speaking during the June 13 opening session, which will include a presentation on drones and sensing technologies that is titled "Eyes in the Sky, On the Ground and Under the Waves." In a sign that Big Data is a key theme this year, a June 15 keynote will be delivered by career firefighter Bart van Leeuwen of Netage, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: "Smart Data for Smarter Fire Protection."

The conference's educational tracks include codes and stanards, fire protection engineering, emergency preparedness/business continuity, electrical safety, detection and notification, loss control/prevention, wildland fire, public education, fire suppression, health care, building and life safety, and fire and emergency services.

The technical sessions include presentations about NFPA 400, the Hazardous Materials Code, and its practical application for prevention chemical facility incidents; changes in NFPA 70-2017, the National Electrical Code; and NFPA 88, the Health Care Facilities Code.

Expo hours are June 13, 4-8 p.m.; June 14, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.; June 15, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at convention center. The NEC Challenge is taking place on the expo floor during the expo. Also featured in the expo are the Smart Solutions Showcase and the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Showcase.
