Mitsubishi Motors Admits to Running False Mileage Tests Since 1991
An internal investigation discovered the tampering
An internal investigation by Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has discovered fuel economy tampering dating back to 1991. President of the company, Tetsuro Aikawa, told reporters the investigation was still ongoing.
"We don't know the whole picture and we are in the process of trying to determine that," he said at a news conference at the transport ministry. "I feel a great responsibility."
The mileage tests in question involved 157,000 of its eK wagon and eK Space light passenger cars, and 468,000 Dayz and Dayz Roox vehicles produced for Nissan Motor Co.
Due to nature of the investigation, it is unclear how customers will be compensated. Mileage fraud is a violation of Japan’s fuel efficiency law, due to the tax breaks given to buyers.
