$20.5 Million Available via DOT to Improve Access to Transit

The grant funds are available for communities across the country looking to improve access to public transit

The DOT’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has announced $20.5 million in competitive grant funds is available to improve access to public transit in communities across the country, according to a report. The funds are provided through the FTA’s Transit-Oriented Development Planning Pilot Program.

“Public transit plays a critical role in connecting Americans to jobs, education and opportunity,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “When we plan housing, jobs and services centered around transit lines, we build a strong foundation for the economic development that our growing nation needs – and reduce pollution, congestion and carbon emissions at the same time.”

The pilot program provides grants for comprehensive planning. Last year, TFA awarded $19.5 million to 21 projects in 17 metro areas. Some of the planning efforts that were supported include an economic analysis for communities along a planned light rail extension, developing updated zoning codes, and developing land-use plans along a corridor where a bus rapid transit system is planned.
