MSHA Chief Highlights Accomplishments and Challenges in Mine Safety

Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health Joseph A. Main highlighted the measureable improvements that have taken place in mine safety and health in the past five years during a speech at the 2016 National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association's annual convention. He noted that the efforts between MSHA and its stakeholders helped make 2015 the safest year in the history of U.S. mining.
"The most important measure of our progress is the number of miners who go home safe and healthy at the end of each shift," said Main.
He also outlined actions taken by the MSHA that have led to compliance improvements, such as reducing chronic violators, historic low levels of respirable coal dust and silica, and record low numbers of mining deaths.
