NYC Fire Department Launches 24-Hour Twitter Handle
The department cautioned that @FDNYAlerts does not replace 911 calls and is not a means for reporting emergencies to the department.
New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro recently announced the launch of a new Twitter handle – @FDNYAlerts – to provide up-to-the-minute information on fires and emergencies in the city. @FDNYAlerts will operate 24/7 and provide New Yorkers with official, automated alerts regarding ongoing Fire Department operations through the account, which "exists solely to inform New Yorkers about incidents and FDNY responses within the five boroughs."
The department cautioned that @FDNYAlerts does not replace 911 calls and is not a means for reporting emergencies to the department.
"@FDNYAlerts will provide the department a vital platform to update New Yorkers about the difficult and dangerous work FDNY members perform 24 hours a day," he said. "We will continue to use every tool at our disposal – from presentations at community events to social media – to inform, educate, and improve the safety of all New Yorkers."
The department's original Twitter handle, @FDNY, will remain active for its more than 150,000 followers and will continue to provide fire and life safety information, as well as news and photos from FDNY incidents and events.
