Quitter's Circle App Backs Up New Year's Resolutions

The American Lung Association has joined forces with Pfizer on a new mobile app and online community called Quitter's Circle that will bring quitters and supporters together, ALA announced Jan. 13.

Noting that more than 160 million Americans have made a New Year's resolution — many of them resolving to quit smoking — and that soon their success rate "gradually falls and a majority of people will drop their resolutions within six months," the American Lung Association has joined forces with Pfizer on a new mobile app and online community called Quitter's Circle that will bring quitters and supporters together, ALA announced Jan. 13.

"If you or someone you know is trying to quit smoking in 2016 — congratulations! Quitting is the best thing a smoker can do for their health, and we're proud of all the quitters and their supporters for taking these steps to a healthier and smokefree future. As you go along a quit journey, remember that slip-ups happen and they don't mean that a quitter has failed. It can take multiple quit attempts before someone is completely smokefree, and with each try the quitter learns a little more about what works and doesn't work for their personal quitting journey," according to ALA.

It asks visitors to download the app and to get tips from the Quitter's Circle team on how to embark on a quit journey. Using the app, people trying to quit can set a quit date, access resources to help them connect with a health care provider, and access resources to start a Quit Fund to help supplement the costs of a quit.

Citing a U.S.-based survey, ALA reports 80 percent of smokers who are trying to quit said that support from others—including friends, family, significant others, and co-workers—is very important to successfully quitting smoking.
