WV Agency Sets Public Meeting on ASTs Rule

The Department of Environmental Protection is hosting the Oct. 1 meeting to hear stakeholders' comments about the draft Aboveground Storage Tank emergency rule.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has announced it will host an Oct. 1 meeting in Charleston so people who have identified themselves as stakeholders in the Aboveground Storage Tank emergency rulemaking process can help to improve the draft rule. The rule will be filed later this year, most likely in December, with the Secretary of State's Office and will be considered during the 2015 legislative session. The draft emergency rule covers registration, maintenance, and routine maintenance inspections and required annual inspections of ASTs, as well as labeling and signage, required Spill Prevention Response Plans, security measures, and corrosion prevention.

DEP is urging tank owners with questions about the process to come forward so they can get their registrations submitted in time before the Oct. 1 registration deadline.

The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m., break at noon, and will resume at 1:30 p.m. It is expected to last until at least 4:30 p.m. DEP is asking participants to RSVP by the end of day on Sept. 26 by emailing [email protected]. The agency is accepting comments on the draft through Oct. 24.

Comments can be emailed, with "AST emergency rule comments" as the subject line, to [email protected] or mailed to: West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection – Public Information Office, AST Emergency Rule Comments, 601 57th Street SE, Charleston, WV 25304.
