Roofing Company Cited by OSHA for Fall Hazards

OSHA has cited Five Star Commercial Roofing and issued nearly $50,000 in fines for allegedly exposing its workers to fall hazards.

OSHA has cited Five Star Commercial Roofing Inc. for a willful safety violation after it allegedly exposed workers to fall hazards of 29 feet. The company exposed employees to hazards at a commercial roofing project based in Bartonville, Ill. OSHA has proposed $49,000 in fines.

The OSHA National Safety Stand-Down is set for June 2-6, 2014.According to OSHA, the fall hazard exposure occurred when workers were installing roofing materials on a commercial sales and service building. The workers were on a roof 29 feet high without the recommended means of fall protection, such as safety nets, guardrail systems, warning line systems, or personal fall arrest. OSHA issued a willful violation, as a willful violation is one committed with intentional, knowing or voluntary disregard for the law's requirements.

Visit OSHA's Stop Falls web page for more information on recent fall protection initiatives. The agency is encouraging employers to participate in the June 2-6 Fall Prevention Safety Stand-Down and has developed new resources the industry can use for it. They are available at the stand-down website, http://www.osha.gov/StopFallsStandDown. Employers can receive formal recognition for participating in the event if they complete an online questionnaire and print their "certificate of participation."
