OSHA Cites Metal Company for Safety Violations after Worker Blinded

Pinnacle Metal Products faces over $90,000 in proposed penalties

OSHA has cited McNeil Group (doing business as Pinnacle Metal Products) for over $90,000 in proposed penalties after a worker faced a serious head injury that left him blind. The incident left the worker completely blind in one eye, and with 50 percent of his vision in the other eye.

The incident occurred in June when a worker in his forties was painting steel ceiling beams on a scissors lift when the lift caught his head between the beam and the lift’s guardrail, according to a press release from OSHA. The worker had not received proper training on operating a scissors lift, according to OSHA.

The incident prompted an investigation from OSHA which found 11 safety violations at the facility based in Columbus, OH. The company also received one willful violation for failure to provide adequate training on machine guarding for workers and exposing workers to amputation and struck-by hazards. The company received ten serious violations, which include failure to train workers on scissor lifts, failure to mark load ratings on machinery and slings, failure to provide a hazardous energy control program, failure to inspect cranes periodically and more.
