Safety programs are only as strong as the information flowing into them. When employees hesitate to report a near-miss, flag an unsafe condition, or surface a concern about a coworker's behavior, the gap between what's happening and what gets recorded quietly widens. Psychological safety, the belief that speaking up won't result in punishment or embarrassment, isn't a culture initiative separate from EHS work. It's what determines whether the data your program relies on reflects reality.
In this session, Roger Audino and Terry Evans of Origami RIsk draw on their experience as EHS practitioners and their work alongside organizations across industries to examine what psychological safety looks like in an occupational setting. Rather than theory, they'll focus on the choices and behaviors that shape whether employees trust the system enough to use it, and what happens to safety programs when that trust is absent.

My mission is to humanize our approach to safety, by developing and managing enterprise-wide initiatives which unify and simplify safety data management, policy, improvement, and communication to maximize our leaders' time creating relationships with our associates which influence their choices at the point of work. Good data drives the deployment of our time and treasure in the right areas, policies and procedures inform, and training builds understanding but the ability to influence people’s decisions is built on our relationships and truly drives the safety of our workplace.
During my 28 years in the safety and industrial hygiene profession I have worked in a range of industries; heavy construction, manufacturing, hospitality, petrochemical, the insurance industry, county government risk management and currently the safety program for Boise Cascade’s wood products manufacturing division. Before becoming a safety, professional I worked as a laborer in Alaska, joined the Army as a Combat Engineer, and was deployed to clear explosives in Kuwait during the Persian Gulf War. After the military Terry finished collage at the Univ. of Alaska Anchorage and began working in the safety profession.
I am a public speaker at both national and regional safety and risk management conferences, I have senior management experience in safety leadership, enterprise wide SAAS program implementation, industrial hygiene, project management, and risk management in the manufacturing, commercial insurance, heavy construction, and petrochemical industries.
