The Use of Direct Reading Instruments/Methods for Assessment and Control of Gas and Vapor Hazards

This webinar will describe strategies on the use of direct reading instruments and methods (DRI/M) for hazard identification and exposure assessment in the workplace. DRI/M are often the best tools to assess gas and vapors in workplaces where exposures to potential hazards may rapidly change and are highly variable. Topics covered will include:  

• when should use of DRI/M be considered
• available instruments/methods
• understanding strengths and limitations of DRI/M
• choosing the appropriate DRI/M for the task
• understanding how the data obtained may best be used to better protect those in the workplace

 
DRI/M are useful to detect and monitor hazardous conditions, to assess and document intervention strategies, and especially to immediately trigger alarms in the event of unsafe conditions. Webinar participants will learn about:

• available resources that may assist in the selection, evaluation and use of appropriate DRI/M for the agents to be monitored
• understanding the context of monitoring methods chosen
• identifying important performance characteristics and limitations of the DRI/M selected

Speaker:
Dr. John Snawder received his Ph.D. degree from Mississippi State University in 1990 and did post-doctoral work at the National Center for Toxicological Research. From 1992-2022 he was at NIOSH as a research toxicologist. Dr. Snawder served as the Leader of the Biomonitoring Research Team and Co-Director of the NIOSH Center for Direct Reading and Sensor Technologies.  His research focused on the role of metabolism of workplace chemicals and the use of biological monitoring to measure exposure and effect, conducting worker exposure assessments across many workplaces and the development and evaluation of direct reading instruments and methods.
