This presentation will address the utility of oral fluid drug testing in workplace safety programs. This will include a review of the scientific foundation, as well as the regulatory and legal status of oral fluid drug testing. The current status of on-site oral fluid drug testing devices will be compared to laboratory-based testing.
Also addressed will be the importance of the choice of appropriate cutoffs by which oral fluid drug testing has the ability to accurately detect recent drug use within a time frame associated with the known impairing effects of drugs. A review of the current regulatory and legal status of oral fluid drug testing will also include an examination of recent workplace drug testing cases (both U.S. and international) where the use of oral fluid as a specimen has been challenged.
