Infectious Diseases Get an Artistic Makeover

Glass sculptor, Luke Jerram, has taken infectious diseases and given them an artistic flair, creating tension between beauty and what the disease actually represents. Jerram’s motivation was indeed based in practicality because he thought it was misleading to depict viruses in color when they are actually smaller than a wavelength of light, making them colorless.

Jerram’s virus art has been used for educational purposes and, it is on display at the Museum of Art and Design in New York.

Check out this video of Luke Jerram’s interpretations of infectious diseases:

While I support the artistic side of society, and I must admit Jerram’s artwork is exquisite, do you think that this is a realistic way in which to educate people about infectious diseases?

Do you think this artist is glorifying a terrible thing, or do you think his artwork serves a purpose in the occupational health industry?

I look forward to your comments.
