Daylight Saving Time Prompts Thoughts of Fire Safety

Did you forget to "spring forward" last weekend? Luckily, I remembered. Although, I must admit, it is still a little difficult to wake up when it's dark outside.

Daylight Saving Time is a good reminder to change the batteries in your home smoke detectors, which could save your life and the lives of your family and beloved pets. And what better time to prepare for the unexpected fire?

In preparation, consider attending this year's NFPA Conference & Expo, which provides an unexpected twist for attendees. Although space is limited, they will have the chance to experience what it is like to train like a firefighter by spending an entire day at Chicago's Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy. What could you expect from the experience?

  • A brief overview of how NFPA standards are applied
  • The chance to wear personal protective equipment
  • Participation in training
  • Advancing hose lines up a staircase
  • Performing search and rescue
  • Using extinguishers on flammable liquid fires
  • Performing an exterior fire attack
  • Get an overview on fire apparatus

Here you'll see NFPA staffers as they participated in a similar training program at the Massachusetts Fire Academy:

Look like fun? It does to me! This would be the number one activity on my list when attending the conference. If you need registration information, click here.
