Watch the Game -- and the Sausage

The recall by Daniele International Inc. of about 1,263,754 pounds of ready-to-eat Italian sausage products, including salami, grew Feb. 4 when the continuing investigation caused 23,754 additional pounds and two additional products to be added. At www.foodsafety.gov, federal food safety experts warned consumers to ensure their Super Bowl parties don't include Salmonella, citing the large recall involving Daniele, which has operations in Pascoag and Mapleville, R.I.

As of 9 p.m. EST Feb. 4, 213 people infected with a matching strain of Salmonella Montevideo have been reported from 42 states and Washington, D.C., since July 1, 2009, CDC reported. A map provided by CDC shows the cases are almost nationwide, with people identified with the strain from California to Maine. However, "[b]ecause this is a commonly occurring strain, public health investigators may determine that some of the illnesses are not part of this outbreak," CDC's advisory noted.

On a happier note, ANSI paid tribute Feb. 4 to standards writing organizations whose work helps to ensure the football game will proceed safely. ASTM F717-89(2006), Standard Specification for Football Helmets, leads this list, which includes IESNA RP-6-01, Sports and Recreational Area Lighting; ANSI/SCTE 07 2006, Digital Transmission Standard for Cable Television; NSF/ANSI 3-A 14159-2-2003, Hygiene Requirements for the Design of Hand Held Tools Used in Meat and Poultry Processing; and ASTM F1115-95(2008)e1, Standard Test Method for Determining the Carbon Dioxide Loss of Beverage Containers.
