The Consumer Product Safety Commission's staff has reports of a total of 121 fireworks-related deaths between 2003 and 2018.
The agency launched an investigation after a worker was seriously injured by a fall from the roof of an Oakland home, and the investigation determined that Nexus Energy Systems, Inc. did not provide required fall protection for its workers.
The program is designed to modernize safety training for logging contractors and their employees, reducing injuries and insurance claims and allowing them to qualify for lower insurance rates.
Dr. Gero Gschwendtner, chair of the ISO technical committee that developed the standards. said the harmonization of the existing standards removes the barrier to international trade and ensures the same safety level for stakeholders all over the world.
Three vessels that could have posed a risk of sinking during a severe storm recently have been removed, and others have been readied for removal.
"Commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in British Columbia, and drowning is the leading cause of death among B.C. fishermen," said Patrick Olsen, manager of Prevention Field Services for WorkSafeBC. Between 2007 and 2018, there were 24 work-related deaths in the commercial fishing industry, and 15 of those were drownings, the agency reported.
A limited selection of products will appear gradually in physical or online stores no earlier than mid-December 2019, Health Canada reported. Federal license holders must provide 60 days' notice to Health Canada of their intent to sell new products.
"While any drop in the overall numbers is encouraging, the ongoing daily carnage on our nation's roads eliminates any sense of celebration. We can – and must – do more collectively to accelerate this downward momentum," Jonathan Adkins, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, said in a June 17 statement.
"Antimicrobial resistance is an invisible pandemic," said Dr. Mariângela Simão, WHO's assistant-director general for Access to Medicines. "We are already starting to see signs of a post-antibiotic era, with the emergence of infections that are untreatable by all classes of antibiotics. We must safeguard these precious last-line antibiotics to ensure we can still treat and prevent serious infections."
"These new mandatory logging devices in commercial vehicles will improve safety for drivers and for all Canadians," said Marc Garneau, Canada's minister of Transport. "We know that fatigue increases the risks of accidents, and that is why we are taking action across all modes of transportation."
The agency seeks companies that have adopted a "no tolerance" attitude toward occupational hearing loss and have both employees and management involved in preventing it, as well as organizations that have developed evidence-based, innovative approaches to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.
"We recognize that recent data indicates that truck-involved crashes are increasing," ATA President and CEO Chris Spear said June 12 at a congressional hearing. "Our industry does not deny this. We do, however, require accurate data that can direct our efforts and resources in appropriately addressing and halting this increase."
The American Society of Safety Professionals' 58th annual conference has a record number of attendees, society officials said June 10.
"The current system is out of date. It's at risk of failing tens of thousands of workers by broadly defining what a white collar worker is, which allows businesses to pay salaries that may be even less than minimum wage," said L&I Director Joel Sacks. "We want to make sure that people who legitimately deserve overtime get paid for the extra hours they work. Washington's minimum wage has been updated repeatedly for decades; this hasn't been. This proposed rule links future salary thresholds to the minimum wage."

The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation will no longer pay for Oxycontin or generic sustained-release oxycodone tablets for workers who suffer on-the-job injuries on or after June 1, 2019. Injured workers who are currently on those medications will have until Dec. 31 to discontinue their use or switch to a different product on the state agency's formulary.
