The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched the #MirrorCheck campaign to raise awareness and prevent backover incidents, a persistent source of serious injury and death in construction zones and other work environments.
Backover incidents occur when drivers or equipment operators fail to see people or objects behind them, often resulting in tragic consequences. OSHA’s campaign is focused on encouraging employers and workers to adopt proven safety practices to reduce these preventable accidents.
The #MirrorCheck initiative includes a variety of educational materials and practical tools that companies can tailor to their job sites. OSHA is urging organizations to engage their teams in safety conversations and reinforce essential habits around visibility and vehicle operation.
Key recommendations from the campaign include:
- Adjust mirrors properly to minimize blind spots.
- Use trained spotters when backing equipment in high-risk areas.
- Install rearview cameras and proximity sensors to improve driver awareness.
- Develop internal traffic control plans to minimize the need for reversing.
- Conduct regular equipment inspections to ensure safety features like alarms and lights are fully operational.
“Many of these incidents are entirely preventable,” said OSHA officials. “This campaign is about taking a few extra steps to protect workers — whether it’s a mirror check, a clear communication plan, or a well-placed spotter. It all adds up to saving lives.”
Employers and safety professionals are encouraged to download and use OSHA’s campaign resources to train employees and promote safer practices on the job. OSHA also invites companies to share their stories and efforts using the hashtag #MirrorCheck on social media to raise broader awareness.
