Iron Foundry Faces Nearly $1 Million in OSHA Penalties Following Recent Inspection

The agency cited Frazer & Jones LLC with 27 safety violations involving fire risks, fall hazards, silica overexposure and more.

OSHA has cited Frazer & Jones LLC — an iron foundry operating in Syracuse, New York, for over 150 years — with 27 safety violations and $990,186 in proposed fines.

According to a recent release, this includes four willful, 13 repeat, seven serious and three other-than-serious violations. OSHA inspectors found hazardous conditions exposing employees to fire and explosions, struck-by hazards, falls, risk of ashphyxiation, caught-in dangers, thermal and chemical burns and overexposure to respirable crystalline silica, following a history of noncompliance with safety regulations.

In 2021, Frazer & Jones — which produces components for industries such as automotive, construction and utilities — entered a settlement agreement to resolve 60 safety violations from a 2019 inspection, paying $276,189 in penalties. In 2023, the company was cited for an additional two serious violations.

“Frazer & Jones’ troubling history of exposing its employees to serious hazards must end,” OSHA Area Director Jeffrey Prebish in Syracuse said via statement. “Despite their agreement to correct violations, they once again failed to implement proper safeguards. OSHA will continue to perform its mission and hold employers accountable when they fail to meet their legal obligations to protect the safety and health of their workers.”

Frazer & Jones has contested the current citations and penalties, referring the case to the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
