ASSP Report Reveals Recommended Strategies to Improve Workplace Safety

A new report from ASSP reveals key strategies to reduce workplace injuries and fatalities, including the prioritization of serious incidents and the integration of AI in safety practices.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has shared findings from its Corporate Listening Tour Report, focusing on real-world strategies to mitigate work-related injuries and fatalities. Led by ASSP CEO Jennifer McNelly, the tour gathers insights from safety executives across industries, with the goal of informing policy.

“While federal and state efforts have improved environments over the past few decades, more must be done to protect workers,” McNelly said in a statement. “The latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that nearly 5,500 fatal work injuries occurred in 2022 – a 5.7 percent increase from the previous year. This means a worker died every 96 minutes. That’s simply not acceptable. On-the-job fatalities and serious injuries are preventable.”

Among the report’s suggestions are to focus resources on preventing serious injuries and fatalities over minor incidents, to address how high turnover and skilled labor shortages impact safety deficiencies, to extend existing safety measures with AI, and to drive cultural changes and accountability regarding safety. The ASSP also calls on safety leaders to leverage their influence to advocate for safety improvements.

The Corporate Listening Tour Report is available to download on the ASSP website.
