MSHA’s Second Annual ‘Stand Down to Save Lives’ Happening on May 22

The event is a yearly initiative that promotes education and outreach within the mining industry.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has scheduled its second annual "Stand Down to Save Lives" event for May 22, 2024.

According to a recent release, this initiative is part of a broader national campaign to reduce injuries and fatalities of miners. From May 20 to 24, MSHA urges the mining community—including miners, operators and unions—to focus on safety and health protocols in and around mines. On May 22, MSHA leaders and staff will visit mining sites to promote education and outreach to prevent serious injuries and illnesses.

“Stand Down to Save Lives is an opportunity for the entire mining community to prioritize and commit to ensuring the health and safety of all miners,” MSHA Assistant Secretary Chris Williamson said in a statement. “We encourage everyone in the mining community to again join MSHA and to stand down on May 22. As we have learned throughout the years, we succeed when we work together, and miners are safer and healthier as a result.”

As part of the event, MSHA encourages participants to engage in open discussions about hazards in mining operations, conduct comprehensive inspections of workplaces and equipment, and participate in safety training sessions. The initiative seeks to enhance day-to-day safety practices as well as foster a culture of risk awareness.
