NSC Urges Drivers to Check Their Vehicles for Outstanding Recalls

This statement is timed with the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, which runs from March 4-10, 2024.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)has deemed March 4-10, 2024, to be Vehicle Safety Recalls Week. As such, both the NHTSA and the National Safety Council (NSC) are taking this opportunity to encourage drivers to check if their vehicles are part of any outstanding recalls.

The NSC's Check to Protect campaign aims to reduce safety risks by encouraging drivers to proactively search for any recalls affecting their vehicles. This initiative is particularly urgent given that approximately 50 million vehicles currently in use, according to the NSC, have not been fixed for known safety issues.

“Safety on the road is a priority for everyone, and with millions of recalled vehicles being used every day, it’s important for drivers to make sure the vehicle they are driving is safe,” NSC’s senior program manager with the Mobility Safety Impact Program, Lonny Haschel, said in a statement. “NSC encourages every driver to check their vehicle for an open recall and get it repaired for free as soon as possible. All roadway users are safer when vehicle safety recalls are repaired.”

The NSC asks drivers to check their vehicle's recall status by visiting CheckToProtect.org, where they can enter their license plate or vehicle identification number (VIN). This service is designed to make it easier for vehicle owners to stay informed about their vehicle's safety status and ensure all necessary repairs are completed.

Notably, all recall repairs can be conducted free of charge at authorized dealerships.
