Washington L&I Updates Electrical Safety Standards

The new regulations, effective from April 1, 2024, aim to improve public safety and align with current industry practices.

The Washington Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) has adopted the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC), as its latest effort to enhance electrical safety statewide.

According to the rulemaking order, this new regulation will go into effect on April 1, 2024, replacing the 2020 standards. The adoption of the 2023 NEC (NFPA 70-2023) aims to align with the latest national safety standards and current industry practices, covering areas such as electrical wiring, overcurrent protection, grounding and equipment installation.

Electrical professionals and other interested parties had the opportunity to review existing regulations, propose changes and offer recommendations throughout the revision process. A Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), comprised of industry experts, alongside the Electrical Board, advised on the final adoption of these updated rules.

The new standards aim to improve public safety by incorporating the latest technological advancements and safety practices in the electrical industry. L&I has also provided additional resources to give stakeholders a comprehensive understanding of the changes and their implications. For more on this decision, visit the rule-making order online.
