NSC Boosts Grant Funding for Prevention of MSDs in the Workplace

The grant is the latest effort of the NSC’s MSD Solutions Lab.

In its latest move to combat musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace, the National Safety Council (NSC) has announced an increase in grant funding to $260,000 for 2024.

According to a release dated January 19, the NSC awards these funds to the Research to Solutions (R2S) grant and the MSD Solutions Pilot Grant, both of which launched in 2023. The R2S grant offers up to $50,000 per project (and $200,000 total), inviting academic institutions and businesses to develop new solutions focused on occupational injury risk reduction. The MSD Pilot Grant, with up to $20,000 per project and $60,000 total, aims to reduce upper-extremity work-related MSDs by pairing organizations with providers to test new technologies in real-world settings.

“Bringing together the brightest minds and pushing the boundaries of MSD prevention research and technology is at the heart of all we do,” Paul Vincent, NSC executive vice president of workplace practice, said in a statement. “We’re proud to bring back these grants for another year so we can expand our network of top innovators to solve this pervasive safety challenge and ultimately help workers lead safer, healthier lives on and off the job.”

With funding from Amazon, the NSC introduced the MSD Solutions Lab in 2021. Since then, a total of $535,000 has been allocated to mitigate MSD risk in the workplace. The NSC will announce grant recipients in May 2024, with winners presenting their findings at the 2025 NSC Safety Congress & Expo. The inaugural grant recipients from the 2023-2024 cycle will share their research at the 2024 NSC Safety Congress & Expo in Orlando, Florida in September 2024.
