CSHEMA Names Its 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
Dr. Dennis Terpin received the honor at the organization’s annual conference.

The Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) just named its Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Dr. Dennis Terpin.
CSHEMA announced the winners at its 70th Annual Conference in Boston in July 2023. More than 600 members and guests attended the Annual Awards Presentation, celebrating the year’s top achievements by higher education institutions and individuals. Winners are based on nominations submitted by the more than 4,000 professionals who comprise the CSHEMA membership. The nominees are evaluated based on their innovation, marketing and communication and individual career achievement.
Dr. Terpin, Ph.D., O.H.S.T. is retired, a Certified Fire Officer, an EMT-P, an EMT instructor and a retired senior industrial hygienist, hospital safety officer and emergency manager at The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). He has also provided Professional Level training classes for organizations such as the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, the American Society of Safety Professionals, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and over 100 colleges, universities and companies.
In addition, Dr. Terpin sits on the board of directors of the West Maui Taxpayers Association, specializing in emergency management and occupational safety and health. He’s also active on the American Society for Testing and Materials F23.65 International Respiratory Protection Committee on protective clothing and respiratory protection. Dr. Terpin is also a Master Level Instructor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at the Center for Domestic Preparedness and The Emergency Management Institute.
The CSHEMA Honorary Life Award is granted to retired individuals who have contributed to environmental health and safety programs for at least 10 years as a member of CSHEMA. According to a release, Dr. Terpin received this honor “for 53 years of experience in Occupational Safety, Laboratory Safety, Health, Emergency Response, Rescue and Emergency Management.” His major certifications include Certified Safety Manager, O.H.S.T. Fire Officer, Paramedic, Hazardous Materials Technician, All Hazards Incident Commander Instructor, All Hazards Safety Officer Instructor.
