ASSP Honors 2023 Society Fellows

Recipients of the society’s highest honor share their advice with attendees at Safety 2023.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) took time to honor its 2023 Society Fellows during Monday's general session at Safety 2023.

ASSP honored three recipients of its highest honor, who took to the stage to receive their recognition before a packed house in the Stars at Night Ballroom in San Antonio’s Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

The three 2023 Society Fellows are:

  • Roger Jensen, Ph.D., J.D., CSP, CPE, FASSP, of Montana Technical University
  • Bruce Lyon, P.E., CSP, ARM, SMS, CHMM, FASSP, of Brown & Brown Inc.
  • Georgi Popov, Ph.D., CSP, SMS, QEP, ARM, CMC, FASSP, FAIHA, of the University of Central Missouri

Stephanie Gurnari, CSP, the branch risk engineering services manager at Chubb and chair of ASSP’s PDC Planning Committee, asked the honorees if they had advice they’d like to share with the audience at the Safety 2023 general session.

“I would say get involved with technical committees and standards committees,” Popov advised. “That will be the best free education that you will ever get.”

“I would add to that, collaborate and work with others,” Lyon said, agreeing with Popov. “When we work together, we’re much stronger. Write, speak, be involved in professional organizations like the ASSP and be a leader. Also, feel good about yourself because we serve in a very honorable profession.”

“That’s absolutely right,” Jensen added. “I would also advise everybody to make sure that you have a career plan and that you’re willing to work to make it happen.”
