Maine L.L. Bean Manufacturing Facility Once Again Receives ‘Star Level’ Designation Under OSHA’s VPP

The site was first recognized in 2007.

An L.L. Bean manufacturing facility has been recognized once again under OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

According to a news release, the manufacturing facility in Brunswick, Maine—which creates “boots, dog beds and perform[s] custom embroidery”— was first deemed a “star” site by OSHA in 2007. Following an evaluation in August last year, the site’s designation was renewed in early April 2023. About 200 people are employed at this location.

“The L.L. Bean Manufacturing Brunswick facility continues to maintain a high level of workplace safety and health,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Galen Blanton in Boston in the news release. “The site has maintained a consistent focus on employee involvement, work practice improvements and engineering controls to reduce or eliminate musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses, even during challenges imposed by the coronavirus.”

The VPP recognizes employers that have excellent health and safety management systems, according to its website. The “star” status is the highest designation an employer can receive under the program. Currently, there are 1,967 federal and state-plan sites in the VPP.
