The Advantages of Using EHS Software

A new white paper from the National Safety Council looks at what benefits using EHS software and Mobile Applications can have for employers.

As technology advances, we are continually learning about how it can impact and improve our lives, including our places of work.

A new white paper from the National Safety Council (NSC) touches on this topic and talks about how EHS software and mobile applications can help with workplace risks and reducing injuries.

The paper, Managing Risks with EHS Software and Mobile Applications, looks at information from other publications and case studies performed by NSC on employers who use EHS software. One of the advantages NSC found in using this software relates to having detailed safety information and data. Information is gathered from multiple sources, “making it easier for employers to track, monitor and evolve safety practices,” the news release said.

EHS software and mobile application use can also help companies stay current on and follow standards and regulations. The report provides a specific example: “fall protection will be prioritized in the EHS system for the construction industry, meaning capabilities such as equipment tracking and custom inspection checklists are needed to ensure a safe workplace environment and adherence to the law.”

The last two advantages—though there are many more—the news release addresses are the reduction in the cost of expenses, such as “employee compensation, recruitment and illness,” and access to reports and other information, due to being able to view it on a phone or device.

With the advantages, NSC also found some difficulties in implementing EHS software. The time commitment for employee education, potential employee hesitation and “partial compliance management” are a few of the issues companies may experience.

“EHS software and mobile applications are a crucial component of any effective risk management strategy and advancements in these powerful, comprehensive tools have made it easier for organizations of all sizes to access and analyze life-saving insights,” said Emily Whitcomb, NSC director of innovation and Work to Zero in the news release.

“In addition to helping leaders select the best program provider, this report demonstrates how to maximize the benefits of EHS software to help organizations further their unique safety goals and ultimately create safer outcomes for their workers,” Whitcomb continued.
