OSHA Proposes $364K in Penalties for Dollar Tree After Inspection

Among the hazards found at the store were slip, trip and fall and fire hazards.

Dollar Tree’s list of violations continues to grow after a recent inspection at one store in Illinois.

According to a news release, a Dollar Tree store in Matteson, Illinois, was cited after inspectors found potential slip, trip and fall, struck-by, fire and electrical hazards as a result of obstructed areas, unsafely stacked materials and blocked electrical panels.

OSHA's proposed penalties total $364,661.

Dollar Tree stores in Washington and Oregon were fined earlier this year by their respective OSHA state plans. The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries found blocked electrical panels and unsafely stacked boxes in two stores and fined them a combined total of nearly $55,000. Oregon OSHA fined Dollar Tree Stores Inc. $32,000 for violations that exposed workers to similar hazards as the Illinois store: trip, fall and struck-by hazards.

“Dollar Tree continues to ignore hazards that put their workers and others at risk of injuries or worse,” said Occupational Safety and Health Chicago South Area Director James Martineck in Tinley Park, Illinois, in the December news release.

“All too often, our inspectors find similar hazards at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores that discount employee safety for the sake of profits. The bottom line is, it has to stop before someone is seriously hurt or unable to safely exit in an emergency," Martineck continued.
